A 13-year-old student at Golden Gate Middle School is facing battery charges after he stabbed his teacher with a pencil and hit her on the head with a backpack.
The incident began when the student got upset in class because his teacher took a pair of scissors from him. He was using them to sharpen a pencil and got emotional when they were taken away.
When the teacher tried to give him a pass to leave class and see a
counselor, she placed it on his desk. The student tore up the pass and stabbed her hand with a mechanical pencil. Then, he hit her on the back of the head with a backpack when she asked for help in removing him from the classroom.
The teacher moved the other students to a safe area. She suffered minor injuries to her hand and a bruise on the back of her head. She sought medical attention on her own.
The student was taken into custody.
According to a spokesperson from Collier County Public Schools, there have been four incidents involving school employees reported this year. The district has a total enrollment of 50,000 students.
All violations of the district’s student conduct code will be addressed using the Discipline Matrix.
The consequences depend on factors like grade level, number of offenses, and previous disciplinary actions, explained the spokesperson.
The student’s prior disciplinary record cannot be disclosed due to the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act.
