After being hit by a car near Florence early on Sunday morning, a 4-year-old child had to be airlifted, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to a crash involving a pedestrian on the Weaver Road overpass close to I-75 at roughly one in the morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

The 50-year-old lady saw another car parked in the eastbound lane of Weaver Road and flashing its headlights at her, according to deputies investigating the incident. According to the sheriff’s office, this forced the woman to reduce the speed of her car from 50 mph to 30 mph on the typically 50 mph route.

According to the sheriff’s office, the eastbound lane motorist noticed a small child standing at the edge of the road without any adult supervision.

The vehicle turned back and stopped in traffic to try to interact with the child. The boy, who is nonverbal and autistic, was hit by the car traveling west at this moment when he walked onto the road from the right shoulder.

According to the sheriff’s office, after deputies carried out life-saving procedures on the scene, the youngster was transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center due to potentially fatal injuries. It is uncertain how the child is now feeling.

The 50-year-old woman was unable to see the youngster, according to the sheriff’s office, because of the dark and poorly lit section of Weaver Road at that time of night.

After the collision, the woman remained at the scene, and deputies discovered that drugs, alcohol, and speed had no role in the collision.

Another motorist on Weaver Road who noticed the lights flashing was Joshua Altman. He told WCPO 9 after the disaster that he applied his Navy medical knowledge without hesitation.

“I checked to see if he still had a pulse and trying to take care of him best we could,” Altman stated. “… I was just trying to keep him awake, trying to talk to him, trying to help him with everything. It was just heartbreaking watching the situation unfold.”

The child had left his family’s apartment at a nearby Mission Lane apartment complex after his family had gone to bed, the sheriff’s office discovered. The location of the crash is around ten minutes’ walk from the apartment building.

The 50-year-old lady and the child’s family are assisting, according to the sheriff’s office, even though no charges have been brought at this time.

The Florence Police Department is in charge of the investigation and circumstances at the child’s house, from which he was able to escape, while the Boone County Sheriff’s Office is looking into the crash.
