Last night, Aakel Jabari Sims, aged 26, was apprehended and faced charges for multiple offenses, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, battery, burglary of an occupied vehicle, and theft. The incident involved Sims allegedly menacing one victim with a firearm and striking another with the weapon.
An officer from the Gainesville Police Department was dispatched to the Walmart parking lot at 1800 NE 12th Avenue around 7:07 p.m.
The female victim recounted that she had been inside a parked car while the male victim went into the store. She claimed to have recognized Sims when he knocked on her car’s driver’s side window.
Upon rolling down the window, Sims reportedly stated, “I told you I was going to catch up with you” and struck her with an open hand. She promptly called the male victim, who was still inside the store.
During the call, she alleged that Sims exposed a gun in his waistband and attempted to retrieve the car keys from the ignition.
According to the male victim, upon exiting the store, he observed Sims leaning into the car. As he approached, Sims purportedly produced a gun and loaded a round into the chamber.
The male victim reported that he urged Sims to put the gun away, but when he momentarily looked away, Sims struck him on the head with the weapon.
A struggle ensued for control of the gun, with the male victim ultimately wresting it from Sims and inadvertently dropping the magazine.
Following the Miranda rights advisory, Sims opted not to communicate with the officer. Notably, he has no prior criminal record. Bail, set by Judge Walter Green, stands at $34,000.
