A Lamborghini burst into flames in upper Manhattan after its driver, attempting to evade the police, crashed, resulting in the death of his 21-year-old passenger, as per police reports on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Tiana Rodriguez from the Bronx, lost her life in the fiery accident that occurred in Inwood on Monday night.
According to police sources, the 22-year-old male driver of the high-end SUV ran a red light shortly after 10 p.m. NYPD officers activated their lights to pull him over, but he fled, speeding north on Tenth Avenue with police in pursuit.
The chase ended when the Lamborghini collided with a silver Hyundai Elantra making a left turn onto West 213th Street. The impact caused the out-of-control Lamborghini to strike the pillar of an above-ground subway track.
Responding officers managed to extract the 22-year-old driver from the vehicle before it ignited in flames, with the passenger still inside.
Video footage captured the intense blaze caused by the collision, revealing what seemed to be the charred remains of the Italian sports car.
The Lamborghini driver was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition, while EMS pronounced the passenger dead at the scene.
The Hyundai driver, a 37-year-old man, was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.
Names of the involved drivers have not been released, and as of Tuesday, the Lamborghini driver was in police custody but had not yet been charged. The investigation is ongoing.
