A man from Texas is suing Walmart and is asking for either $100 million in damages or the opportunity to have unlimited free shopping for his entire life at any Walmart store.
Roderick Jackson, who lives in Waskom, Texas, submitted two handwritten complaints on Monday at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. Walmart’s headquarters are located in Bentonville, Arkansas.
The complaints don’t provide many details about why Jackson is taking legal action. However, they claim that an incident took place in March 2021 at a store in Omaha, Nebraska.
The allegations include a “false pretense of shoplifting” and the violation of Jackson’s civil rights based on his race/color.
In addition to the monetary compensation or lifetime free shopping, Jackson is requesting that Walmart covers all his court fees. It’s worth noting that Jackson filed the complaints without a lawyer, and attempts to reach him at the listed phone number were unsuccessful.
On Thursday, a Walmart representative declared that the company “does not tolerate discrimination of any kind.”
“Mr. Jackson’s allegations are almost identical to a lawsuit he filed against our company in 2021 that was dismissed. We intend to defend the company against the allegations once we have been properly served and will quickly ask the court to dismiss any claims that are without merit,” the company stated.
In 2021, Jackson took legal action against Walmart, claiming he was unfairly treated. He said he was wrongly accused of a crime and targeted because of his race, resulting in his arrest. In the lawsuit, he mentioned feeling emotional distress and pain from being handcuffed. However, he didn’t specify the police department involved.
Originally, he asked for $100 million and a significant credit for future shopping. Later, he changed his request to $175 million in damages. The case was dismissed that year because he didn’t properly notify Walmart as required by court documents.
