The big retailer paid $45 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit. Consumers who made purchases at Walmart between January 19, 2024, and October 19, 2018, may receive compensation.

A $45 million settlement was reached in a class-action lawsuit against Walmart, and consumers who made purchases at their neighborhood Walmart between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, might be eligible for $500 in compensation.

The retail behemoth was sued in Florida in 2022 for allegedly engaging in “deceptive business practices.” Despite their denial of any misconduct, the company has decided to settle the complaint.

Customers were allegedly overpaying for “weighted goods,” such as packed citrus fruits, meat, and fish, according to the lawsuit filed against the retailer. Consumers were overpaying for the products compared to the lowest advertised in-store price.

As per the lawsuit, “Walmart uses unfair and deceptive business practices to deceivingly, misleadingly, and unjustly pilfer, to Walmart’s financial benefit, its customers’ hard-earned grocery dollars.”

The Kukorinis v. Walmart Inc. lawsuit outcomes were announced on a website along with instructions for customers on how to claim their $500 compensation.

“All Persons 1 who Purchased Weighted Goods and/or Bagged Citrus in-person at a Walmart retail store, supercenter, or neighborhood market in the United States or Puerto Rico (“Walmart Store”) from October 19, 2018, through and including January 19, 2024 (the “Settlement Class Period”).”

You have a short window of time to apply to be eligible for the award if this describes you. You have until May 22 (postmarked letter date) to determine whether to exclude yourself, object to the settlement offer, or make comments.

You have until June 5 to submit your online acceptance of the settlement offer if you decide to take up the $500 award. Should you decide to send it via standard mail, the submission must be postmarked by June 5th at the latest.

It is your decision to remain silent. It says, “Unless you exclude yourself from the Settlement, you are automatically part of the Settlement. If you do nothing, you will get no payment from this Settlement, and you will give up the right to sue, continue to sue, or be part of another lawsuit against Walmart related to the legal claims resolved by this Settlement.”

According to USA Today, Walmart sent a comment to the media outlet:

“We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need. We still deny the allegations. However, we believe a settlement is in the best interest of both parties.”
