This month in Central Virginia, thousands of college graduates, like Tanya Mccoy and Kevin Mccoy Jr., will get their diplomas. In contrast to the majority of graduates that cross the stage, the Mccoys have an extremely unique relationship.
The two grads from Virginia State University are a mother and a son. Tanya Mccoy broke down in tears on Friday during graduation rehearsal.
In 1987, she started her music degree at VSU, but she quit to travel the world singing in a gospel choir. She claimed that what motivated her to complete her degree was the desire to leave a legacy.
“I accomplished what I started. I can’t believe I did it. I did it,” she stated.
Additionally, Kevin Mccoy Jr. stated that he did not follow a straight path to a college degree. He has been discovering his mission and his hobbies for the past seven years.
He claimed that during that period, he developed his character and set him up for leadership in the military and with a degree in business management.

“There is going to be a whole lot of pride from me when I walk the stage,” he stated.
Despite having chosen different routes, the mother and son will nevertheless graduate from college together. When they thought back on how they had both overcome obstacles in life, they beamingly smiled. Kevin also talked about how proud he will be of his mother when she crosses the stage.
“Most people don’t follow through with what they say they are going to do, especially when it comes to finishing their degree and my mama did just that,” he stated.
This Mother’s Day weekend will mean something completely different thanks to a family accomplishment.
“I don’t need no flowers. I don’t need no gifts. I have won,” Tanya stated.
