Graham Backs Israel with Calls for Increased Bombs, Draws Comparison to Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, compared the Gaza War to World War II and stated that dropping atomic bombs on Japan was the “right decision” to finish the battle. On Sunday, he urged the US to continue providing ammunition to Israel.

Graham used the analogy when he told NBC’s Kristen Welker that Israel was up against a “existential threat” from adversaries like Hamas and that it would require more weaponry to win the battle.

In his opinion, Japan and Germany posed an existential threat to the US in the 1940s.

“So when we were faced with destruction as a nation after Pearl Harbor fighting the Germans and the Japanese, we decided to end the war by bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear weapons,” Graham stated.

“That was the right decision,” he further added. “Give Israel the bombs they need to end the war. They can’t afford to lose, and work with them to minimize casualties.”

The senator made these remarks as US President Joe Biden warned to stop providing Israeli authorities with bombs and artillery shells if they assaulted Rafah without a clear strategy in place to protect civilians. Almost a million Palestinians have recently moved into the city, which is the southernmost urban core of Gaza, as a result of the conflict.

Republicans in Congress, like Graham, who brought up the atomic bombings several times during his interview, denounced Biden’s warning.

“Why is it OK for America to drop two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end their existential threat war?” Graham stated. “Why was it OK for us to do that? I thought it was OK.”

“To Israel, do whatever you have to do to survive as a Jewish state,” he added.

Welker put Graham to the test by claiming that military officials attest to the fact that modern weaponry technology is more accurate and capable of minimizing losses among civilians.

The senator brushed off Welker’s comment. “Yeah, these military officials that you’re talking about are full of crap,” Graham responded.

Graham has already used the events of Nagasaki and Hiroshima to support the supply of weapons to Tel Aviv.

Graham responded to Biden’s threat to cut off military supplies at a press conference on Friday by saying, “We saved a million Americans from having to go and invade Japan. So, no. Israel’s tactics are not my problem.”

He said as much on Wednesday during a congressional session. Earlier last month, Israel started making incursions into Rafah in defiance of the White House’s warning.

Since then, the Biden administration has stopped sending Israel 3,500 bombs because of worries that the weaponry would be used in Rafah. Additionally, the president is under increasing criticism from Democrats in Congress for his backing of Tel Aviv.

An estimated $3.8 billion in defense systems and armaments are provided by the US to Israel annually. In April, Congress approved a $15 billion military aid package for Israel, which includes roughly $5 billion for restocking weaponry.
