Thursday’s severe hailstorm that hit the Denver metro region produced the biggest hailstones the county has seen in the past 35 years and caused extensive damage.
With baseball-sized hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a “destructive” Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Denver area late Thursday evening, highlighting the potentially fatal situation.
On Thursday, Commerce City recorded 2.75 inches of the highest hail reported in Denver County. This hail report is the county’s largest since 1989.

In the Denver region, there have been at least 55 reports of hail that is at least one inch in diameter.
When the storm went through and set off the security alarms, hail damaged cars, buildings, and residences. According to Aurora police, they had a busy night responding to these alarms.
“With the influx in calls regarding the alarms, we’re asking the affected public to safely check their property for damage or a triggered alarm if possible,” officers stated on social media.
