The district attorney’s office said that in 2019, a guy wanted for killing a woman in Colorado was found guilty of killing a friend and taking his car in Houston. He will spend the rest of his life in jail.
Last Thursday, a jury found Abbas Abdal Abed, age 47, guilty of killing Abdulrahman Haris, age 29, with a knife on December 15.
Records show that Abed ran away to Houston after being accused of killing 31-year-old Chelsea Anne Snider at an extended-stay hotel in the Denver area of Sheridan.
According to news reports, Snider was a mother of three, and Abed worked for Uber. It’s not clear what their relationship is.
Abed moved to the area because he had lived there before and knew a few people, like Haris. Before Abed moved, they both went to Houston from Iraq around the same time.
Haris is said to have given Abed money and taken him to a Walmart in southwest Houston, near Sam Houston Parkway. Abed then stabbed Haris, who was seen on security footage running for help in the parking lot after being hurt. Abed then drove away with Haris’s car.
Haris later died because he had been hurt in his neck and stomach.
After two weeks, Abed was found at a grocery store in west Houston by the Houston Police Department.
The US Marshals put up flyers saying that Abed was a suspect in a Colorado murder. One of these signs was seen by a security guard, who recognized Abed.
“Houston is a big city with lots of different kinds of people, so someone on the run might think they can hide here. But Ogg said, “The strength of our community is how well it works together, and we will find fugitives and bring them to justice.”
“It’s sad that a young man died because someone he barely knew tried to avoid taking responsibility and being held accountable.”
The murder case in Colorado, officials said, is still open.
The district attorney said that Abed must stay in jail for 30 years before he can be let out.
