PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Monday, a woman who did drugs at home while leaving her baby in a hot car was sent to jail.
Megan Dauphin took her baby McKinlee Grace Garner with her when she went to buy cigarettes on September 2, 2020. But when Dauphin got back home, she forgot to let McKinlee out of the truck.
Dauphin didn’t understand what she had done until her stepdaughter asked about the 7-week-old baby. She then ran to the car. The heat had killed the baby.
Tiffany Dauphin, Megan’s sister, says that it was a mistake and that Megan is a great mom.
“I’ve known her to be kind, respectful, honest, and generous. She has always been there to help when someone in the family needed something. She adores children. Tiffany Dauphin said, “She has always loved kids.
Megan Dauphin was sentenced to 30 years in jail for aggravated manslaughter of a child. The prosecution said that Dauphin only cares about herself.
“Megan has always been worried, and all I’ve ever heard her say is, “You’re going to jail.” And she only cared about the fact that they were the same, you know. “If I had done this, I would never be able to live with myself,” said Nicole Curry, a close friend.
Megan said she did the best she could, given how sad everyone was.
“Every day, I do everything I can to be there for my other kids. But even that wouldn’t stop me from crying in the bathroom every time I saw a little girl I was helping, said Megan Dauphin.
Within the next 30 days, Dauphin has the right to appeal the sentence.
