A probationary police officer with the New York Police Department passed away late on Wednesday morning after suffering a medical event during a training exercise at a shooting range in the Bronx.
In the next few days, the recruit was scheduled to graduate.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., Edgar Ordonez, 33, was undergoing training at the NYPD’s Rodman’s Neck gun range when he had the medical incident.
He passed away a few hours after being brought to Jacobi Medical Center in severe condition.
“Our hearts are heavy as we honor our fallen brother, Probationary Police Officer Edgar Ordonez,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban stated in a post on X. “We tragically lost Edgar earlier today, just a few days before he was set to graduate and join his fellow finest protecting New York City.”

On Monday, Ordonez was supposed to receive his police academy diploma. The cause of the medical incident is unknown to the local authorities; it could have been a heart attack or heat stroke.

Wednesday’s maximum temperature in the Bronx was predicted to be 87 degrees with 70% humidity.
Up to 8 p.m. EDT, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the Bronx and other areas of New York City, with a heat index of up to 95 degrees.
