After confessing to raping a woman and using a baseball bat and metal chain as “instruments of torture” for weeks until watchful neighbors noticed her in distress and phoned the police, an Ohio man will serve decades in jail.
Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan released a news release on Thursday, announcing that 36-year-old Shane Edward Hooper has been sentenced to between 50 and 55 1/2 years in prison.
According to online court documents, Hooper entered a guilty plea to counts of rape, kidnapping, felonious assault, and strangling.
Prosecutor Grogan declared following the sentencing that “Shane Hooper created a torture chamber and trapped this woman in it. Now he’ll be trapped in prison for at least the next 50 years.”
The atrocity started in May 2023 when Hooper beat a woman at her home with a metal chain and baseball bat—”instruments of torture,” according to the prosecution.
Authorities claimed that at one point, he “escalated his control over the victim” by securing windows and doors shut to prevent her from leaving. Prosecutors claimed Hooper threatened to kill her and her family and inflicted severe psychological trauma on her.
The case was made public the next month after Hooper relocated her to a place on Marion’s Silver Street, around 50 miles north of Columbus, Ohio, and watchful neighbors noticed her in distress and alerted the authorities.
The 28-year-old lady was found injured after police were called to a residence to do a welfare check. Prosecutors alleged that she was admitted to the hospital with eight cracked ribs, broken bones, and open wounds.
“The brave woman told us she had been praying for rescue and God answered her prayers,” Grogan stated.

“Some good citizens spoke up and their actions likely saved this woman’s life,” Grogan stated. “That’s the Marion County spirit I know and love.”
