According to the family attorney, an Illinois woman reported that she was afraid there was an intruder in her home, and when she phoned the authorities last week, law officials shot and killed her.

Illinois State Police, who is conducting an investigation at the sheriff’s office’s request, sent a news release stating that Sonya Massey, 36, passed away during an incident with deputies from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in Springfield early on July 6.

In order to “protect the integrity of the legal process,” state police stated that body camera footage and other case-related data are not being provided right now.

Following a 911 call, deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue just before one in the morning, according to separate news releases from the sheriff’s office and state police.

The sheriff’s office said that a prowler report prompted their call.

State police reported on Wednesday that Massey was shot during the incident and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
