In a heartbreaking event on Tuesday, a young English teacher and cheer coach from Texas was “randomly” shot and killed at an outdoor bar in San Antonio.
Just after midnight, Ayden Burt, a cherished Jasper High teacher of 28 years, was hit by a bullet at a nearby rooftop bar while attending the Texas High School Coaches Association Conference, according to San Antonio police.
Although Burt was allegedly shot “randomly,” the identity of the shooter is still unknown to the authorities.
“Our Homicide Detectives are working to bring justice to Ayden and her family; however, details are limited,” the police department stated. “SAPD is asking for the public’s help for any information regarding this tragic incident.”
Burt was seated on the rooftop patio of Smoke Skybar on East Crockett Street when a bullet wounded her in the upper back, according to police, who spoke with 12 News Now.
Her back was toward the I-37, a neighboring highway, and according to the local news station, investigators think the gunfire came from there. When the incident happened, Burt was at the bar with other coaches from throughout the state.
“She was sitting right next to me laughing and talking and the next [minute] bleeding in my lap,” Humble High School football coach Robert Murphy stated on X. “My coaches did everything they could performing CPR etc to save her life. She was excited about the upcoming year. Traumatizing.”
