In Fair Lawn, New Jersey, a two-alarm fire destroyed a row of businesses, including a well-known bakery. It was just after 2:30 a.m. on Friday when a heavy fire swept along the Fair Lawn Road strip. Zadies Kosher Bake Shop, a Jewish bakery, was severely damaged.

“All our recipes are inside, they are all handwritten, they’re four generations old, all on a piece of paper,” the owner stated. “On Friday, shabbas, we’re a kosher bakery, there will be a lot of people here trying to get their stuff. I can’t even contact all of the people who have orders for today.”

The strip of shops also included a restaurant, a dry cleaner, a barbershop, and a Jewish deli. All of these businesses were affected.

“It did spread down the line so that’s why we had multiple towers in operation,” Doug Sadowski, Public Information Officer, Fair Lawn Fire Department stated.

Even into the wee hours of the morning, crews kept dousing hot places with water. The Green Dragon Restaurant is thought to be the source of the fire.

“When we first pulled up there were flames coming out of the roof, it seems it was by the kitchen area, but that’s for the prosecutors to determine,” Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Rinaldo, Fair Lawn Fire Department stated. “It took about an hour and a half for us to knock everything down.”

An inquiry is underway to find the fire’s cause. Nobody was hurt. As firemen worked to put out hot spots and clear up water, road closures affected the area.
