The convicted felon who opened fire on a guy with a pistol he had just taken from his truck may not have been betting on one thing when he did so, according to Fort Lauderdale police: the victim had another gun.
Shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while the man’s Ford pickup was parked at a business at 19 NW Seventh Ave., Sinclair Jamaal Ellis, 43, of Lauderdale Lakes broke the window and stole his weapon, according to the police.
According to the police report, the victim ran outside and challenged Ellis as he rode off on his bicycle after noticing that Ellis, who was found guilty of burglary in 2023, had broken into his truck.
Ellis allegedly shot the man in the leg with the stolen Canik 9 mm handgun while the victim yelled at him, according to the police.
However, Ellis was going to face a significant issue soon: the victim possessed an additional Canik 9 mm handgun, according to the police report.

Ellis was shot “multiple times” by the man when he took out the second gun.
Ellis needed surgery and remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit in secure custody on Friday. Both guys were brought to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment, and both men emerged alive.
Ellis is scheduled to appear in court on accusations of armed burglary, attempted murder, and felon in possession of a handgun. Due to his hospital stay, his mug shot was not accessible on Friday.
