Brockton Hospital reopened on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone after closing for more than a year. For the first time since an electrical fire in February 2023 forced the hospital to close and 160 people to evacuate, staff and patients returned.
“A lot of people in these areas have difficulty with transportation, difficulty with fiance, difficulties with language so they need the community hospitals to get the services that they so desperately need,” nurse Cindy Boyd said.
The hospital has reopened to the excitement of the staff.
“This is the best day I’ve had in a year and a half,” Brockton Hospital CEO Bob Haffey stated.
EMS teams, doctors’ offices, and other hospitals have been under pressure ever since the hospital closed. In emergency rooms, patients had to wait for hours, and in appointments, they had to wait months.
“It just gives us more places to go with the patients. We’re not standing in lines, long lines at the other hospitals. Patients have more options,” a EMS worker stated.
“We’re not waiting for four hours waiting for a bed. Makes our resources available quicker,” another EMS worker stated.
After other hospitals in Massachusetts were closed due to financial difficulties, Haffey says it’s time for patients to celebrate.
“Steward’s wreaked havoc on the health care system in Massachusetts. It is up to the other hospitals to pick up the pieces,” Haffley stated.

Renovations at the Brockton Hospital
A number of new features and renovations to the facility will be unveiled on Tuesday. Better cardiac catheterization labs, a new outpatient facility, and a behavioral health unit housed within the emergency department are all anticipated by patients.
“Brockton Hospital has provided safe, quality healthcare to the community for the past 125 years, and we are dedicated to continuing this legacy for another 125 years and beyond,” the hospital stated.
September will see the opening of the maternity department. Services related to mental health, pediatrics, and other areas will be introduced later in the year.
