Charges have been brought against two men from Missouri for abandoning eight puppies in a sealed plastic tote outside a local humane organization that had closed for the day, causing them to die from heat exhaustion.
Thirty-year-old Seth Vaile is accused of eight charges of animal mistreatment. In the ongoing investigation, 36-year-old Samuel Allen is also charged, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
When staff members of the Jasper County Humane Society opened the tote on Sunday, they discovered the canines were dead outside the 140 E. Emperor Lane facility. It was a tragic discovery.
According to a probable cause statement detailing the charges, deputies were summoned to the humane society on Monday at 11:40 a.m. for an animal mistreatment complaint. Following this, they initiated an investigation.
When the deputy arrived, he stated that the caller had reported discovering the tote between two shrubs on the property. According to the statement, a veterinarian concluded that the canines’ cause of death was heat exhaustion.
On Sunday at 10:27 a.m., according to facility video film, a guy was seen leaving the tote on the ground between shrubs and then leaving.
“The tote was placed partial between some bushes, halfway on the sidewalk, and in the sun,” according to the document. “The tote was closed, which caused it to be completely sealed.”
The individual in the video, who was wearing a shirt with the number 54 on the back, was immediately recognized by the authorities as Vaile. According to the statement, he was taken into custody at the Jasper County Detention Center after being detained on a warrant.
“The suspect was still wearing the shirt with the number 54 on the back at the time of his arrest for the warrant,” the document stated.

Vaile acknowledged dropping off the puppies and acknowledged that the shop was closed, according to the probable cause statement.
Connie Andrews, the Humane Society’s director stated: “I don’t often comment on pets being left outside the shelter as I’m glad they at least chose to leave them where they will be found and cared for. But to the person that left these 8 puppies in a closed tote outside the shelter in a place that is not easily seen, we found them but all 8 have died. Why did you not leave them by the door where they could be found?”
“I do not understand leaving them where we could not see them,” she continued. “We may be full but would never turn these babies away and if it’s the drop off fees that forced someone to do this, we have never turned puppies away even if their owner could not pay. We have actually been fixing the moms for free when taking the puppies. I am asking for your help to spread the word that this is NOT OKAY!”
