The Justice Department has requested a judge to postpone the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, who is accused of retaining classified documents. The trial, originally scheduled for August 14, has been asked to be rescheduled for December 11.
Prosecutors from special counsel Jack Smith’s team have cited the need for a delay due to the involvement of classified information and the requirement for Trump’s lawyers to obtain security clearances, which is already in progress.
In a recent filing, the Justice Department stated that they have started sharing relevant evidence with Trump’s legal team.
However, they emphasized the importance of allowing sufficient time for the defense counsel to review and comprehend the discovery material, make their own decisions regarding any production to the government, and for the government to conduct its review.
The Justice Department mentioned that Trump’s lawyers have no objection to the trial date being pushed back, and the judge will ultimately determine the new trial date.
