The holidays are meant to be a time of immense happiness. For the more than 2,000 Americans who will lose their jobs on December 20, five days before Christmas, that will not be the case this year.
According to a recent announcement, Boeing, which has had a very contentious year, will be laying off 2,000 employees. While some layoffs may happen across the nation, the majority will happen in the state of Washington.
Their South Carolina operation will be responsible for 200 of those layoffs. Boeing manufactures commercial aircraft in both South Carolina and Washington.
Washington State will be the first to make cuts, followed by South Carolina, Oregon, and Missouri. There is no information on the precise amount of cuts in Missouri and Oregon.
When a big business makes significant layoffs, it must notify the government and the impacted employees 60 days in advance.
Affected employees will receive their compensation through January 17 in order to comply with the legislation, and Boeing started informing them on Wednesday, November 20.
Laying off so many workers just before the holidays is not a good idea from the outside. By providing some items to leaving employees, Boeing is making some progress in cleaning up after the altercation.
“Eligible employees will receive severance pay, career transition services, and subsidized health care benefits up to three months after leaving the company,” a Boeing spokeswoman stated.
