Big Y started its yearly Sack Hunger Christmas initiative with the goal of donating meals to nearby food banks in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Worcester County Food Bank, Greater Boston Food Bank, and Connecticut Food Share are the four main food banks that are supported by the program. These groups work together to support local organizations that assist families in need, such as soup kitchens, food pantries, elder food programs, and others.
Customers can donate $5 to the Sack Hunger campaign online by clicking here or at Big Y’s supermarkets and Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors. Ten meals are given to hungry people for every $5 gift. The promotion ends on December 11.
This year, Big Y is stepping up its efforts by contributing a share of the profits from several departments in addition to the register donations.
The campaign will receive a percentage of revenue from the floral and produce departments from November 14–20. Sack Hunger will benefit from the sales of Big Y’s private label items from November 29 to December 4.
Additionally, a percentage of meat department sales will be contributed to the charity between December 5 and 11.

Over the past 13 years, Big Y’s Sack Hunger program has given millions of meals to local food banks throughout the year. Donations of fresh produce, meat, dairy, baked goods, frozen foods, and groceries have also helped.
