WPBN: On Friday, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers detained a man in Del Rio, Texas, close to the border, on suspicion of helping smuggle a 5-year-old daughter from Mexico into the United States.

After learning that a male had been apprehended by border surveillance while transporting a child across the Rio Grande, Texas DPS reported that a trooper pulled over a Dodge pickup truck in Del Rio.

The 5-year-old girl who was transported across the border was put into another smuggler’s SUV and brought to a motel, Texas DPS spokesperson Lt. Chris Olivarez stated.

After watching the pickup vehicle for a while, troopers pulled it over and performed a traffic stop. Troops discovered during the stop that the 5-year-old daughter was from Mexico and had recently entered the country illegally.

Additionally, the trooper compared the female in the pickup truck with the image of the girl in the surveillance tape.

He pointed out the child’s bow, which was also captured on camera, while he asked the girl questions in Spanish. At the time of the traffic stop, Dolores Lopez, the girl’s mother, was also inside the truck.

According to Texas DPS, the mother is originally from Mexico and is currently residing in North Carolina. According to Lopez, she found a smuggling outfit online and agreed to pay $8,000 to have her kid transported into the United States.

The smuggler, identified as Mexican Roman Ibarra Rojo, was eventually taken into custody by troopers. Rojo was accused with smuggling an individual under the age of eighteen.

Rojo admitted to receiving $1,000 to smuggle the 5-year-old daughter into the United States, according to Texas DPS. According to Olivarez, Rojo was previously detained for smuggling in 2022.

It was suggested that Lopez and her daughter be charged with endangering her child when they were reported to the U.S. Border Patrol. The district attorney will have the final say over whether to bring charges against the mother.
