WPBN: Costco plans to discontinue selling books at the majority of its U.S. locations at the start of the year, which will frustrate book bargain hunters.
The well-liked book area of Costco will be eliminated from most of its more than 600 locations in the US in January.
Additionally, the cheap store company informed publishers throughout the summer that it would only reopen during the holiday season, which runs from September to December, and at other sporadic times, according to The New York Times.
To the executives, Costco said that the adjustment was made because, unlike other products, stacking books on tables requires a lot of work and must be done by hand.
As more people purchase books online from sites like Amazon, the decision was made.
Publisher’s Weekly, a trade news publication, said this week that books will continue to be available in about 100 Costco locations nationwide throughout the year.
According to the site, the store’s original plans would be reversed if some books were kept in-store.
Executives from Costco and publishing will also be observing sales patterns for Taylor Swift’s official Eras Tour book, which will be available only at Target beginning on Black Friday, according to Publisher’s Weekly.

The journal claims that if book sales keep up their strong performance, Costco may reintroduce literary sections to additional locations, or if sales are slow, all of them may become seasonal.
