The discovery of a lady’s wedding ring by firemen in the ruins of her home, which had been burned by the Eaton Fire, created a great deal of excitement for the woman who lived in Southern California.
For the past eighteen years, Victoria DeSantis, her husband Marko DeSantis, and their two children have made their home in Altadena, which is located on the 3200 block of Olive Avenue.
The panic that they experienced as the rapidly spreading fire threatened thousands of houses and forced many others to escape for their own safety was brought to their attention.
When they were notified, it was sometime about three in the morning, and they started packing up as soon as they could, taking any vital stuff that came to mind.
On that particular day, Victoria had taken off her wedding rings since her hands were dry and the lotion she was using was causing the bands to slide off.
Therefore, she positioned her wedding ring and band, in addition to her mother’s wedding ring, in close proximity to the entrance, and she made a mental note to retrieve them before leaving the house.
In the midst of the mayhem and confusion, they left their house, and not long after that, Victoria discovered that she had forgotten to bring the rings with her. At first, she didn’t seem overly concerned because she was under the impression that her house would be secure.
“You hold out hope that you’re going to be that one little house that made it,” she stated. “You don’t want the neighborhood to be gone.”
The following day, however, she made her way back to the property, and her heart sank when she saw nothing but burned ruins and rubble where the house had previously been.
In the hopes of discovering the rings, she started rummaging through the rubble. In the midst of the fire, she discovered her engagement ring, which had been melted. She proceeded to ask the firefighters in the area for assistance in locating her wedding band.
Regarding the amazing find, she recalled, “One of the guys said, ‘I found a ring, but it isn’t gold,’ and it was my wedding band. He found my wedding band intact, but I thought it had melted into a blob of metal.”
Photographs of the discovery showed Victoria holding up the silver wedding band while sobbing with happiness.
“Shout out to CAL FIRE Riverside,” Marko stated. “Thanks for saving our marriage.”
Despite losing everything else in their house, the couple expressed gratitude that no one was hurt and stated that they would rebuild their life day by day. They are also appreciative of the community’s overwhelming support.
“There’s that old quote, ‘If you’re going through hell, keep going,’ and I think that’s where we are right now,” Marko stated. “We’re going through hell, but we have this wedding ring and we’re going to keep going.”
“It’s these small moments that bring hope to devastation, and we’re proud of our firefighters for all they are doing to help in LA County,” the CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department wrote on their Instagram page after sharing the fortunate discovery.
