MIAMI – In Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, a shooting occurred at an AutoZone, and the police have determined that it was triggered by a mechanic’s jealousy towards another car repairman who received more work. The suspect, Desrick C. Oliver from Margate, was arrested on several charges.
The incident took place on Thursday, just after 2 p.m., at the AutoZone store located at Northwest Seventh Avenue and 54th Street, close to Interstate 95.
During an argument, Oliver fired multiple shots at the victim while he was working on a car, hitting him in the chest and leg.
Fortunately, the wounded mechanic survived and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
A customer who was present at the scene with her daughter recounted how she grabbed the young girl and sought cover as the shots rang out.
According to police, witnesses stated that the disagreement stemmed from Oliver’s jealousy over the victim’s higher workload compared to his own.
Oliver and the victim had known each other for over a year, but it is unclear from the Miami Police Department report whether they worked independently or for the same company.
After the shooting, Oliver fled the scene, but he was apprehended near the AutoZone on Monday night. The details of the statement he made to detectives were not disclosed in the arrest report.
Desrick C. Oliver, a Jamaican national, is currently held without bond in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He is facing charges of attempted murder, child neglect causing no great bodily harm, discharging a firearm in public, and criminal mischief.
