On Sunday night in Miami, an uninhabited house turned into a crime scene when a person was fatally shot inside, according to authorities.
The City of Miami Police received a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 10:15 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased individual within a residence on Northeast 77th Street, near 5th Avenue.
“There is a body inside there since last night, so I don’t know exactly what happened because I was told to stay away from the property,” said Maria Escandell, the owner of the house where the shooting occurred.
Escandell mentioned that she had been fixing up the property for rental, but squatters had recently taken over the house.
Escandell stated that, “Someone broke into the house, they changed the locks and they stayed there like they owned the property. We called the police, we made a report and the police told us not to do anything, to stay away from the property because they need to investigate.”
On August 16th, Escandell reported an incident to the police. She discovered a woman residing in her home, who asserted she had a lease for the property.
Despite being engaged in a month-long legal process to remove the squatters, Escandell expressed frustration that no resolution had been reached.
