Two 13-year-old twins recently drowned in a Miami-Dade County lake, prompting Bridget McKinney to raise awareness and prevent similar tragedies.
McKinney created the non-profit group, Professionals Sharing with a Purpose, after learning about a drowning incident in 2016.
The group is dedicated to helping disadvantaged children learn how to swim, as Black and Brown children drown at a much higher rate due to the lack of access to swimming programs.
McKinney partnered with Wright & Young Funeral Home to provide assistance to the families of drowning victims.
The Miami-Dade County public school’s Learn to Swim program has been brought to Scott Lake Elementary, where instructors teach kids the basics of swimming, including how to safely enter and exit the water.
The program has seven portable pools and will be available for about ten weeks. All drownings are preventable, according to McKinney. Those interested in helping can reach out to P-SWAP or Wright and Funeral Home.
