A man from Riverview was declared guilty on Wednesday for the 2017 murder of his daughter after a two-week trial, as stated by prosecutors.
Nahshon Shannon was convicted by a jury of third-degree felony murder and child abuse, according to prosecutors.
On July 1, 2017, Shannon collected his 13-year-old daughter from her mother’s home, officials reported. A few days later, the teen’s body was discovered in a shallow grave at Triple Creek Nature Preserve.
Prosecutors mentioned that investigators were able to connect Shannon to the crime through tire marks found near the body that matched those on his vehicle.
They also noted that he erased data from his phone before it could be examined for evidence.
Additionally, it was reported that Shannon had tape and a bag in his car that matched the same type used in disposing of the body.
Investigators also uncovered a screw from a shovel near the body that corresponded to a shovel at Shannon’s residence, which was missing a screw.
“The victim in this case was a child whose life was only beginning,” State Attorney Suzy Lopez stated in a statement. “Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends as they navigate through this tragedy. Our prosecutors were presented with a challenging circumstantial case which they skillfully presented to jurors. We are thankful for the jury’s service and appreciate their time and dedication to the trial.”
Shannon will be sentenced in November and could be in prison for up to 20 years. Family members will share their thoughts at the hearing, officials mentioned.
