According to the Port Orange Police Department, a 13-year-old boy was shot in what looks to have been an unintentional incident, leaving him seriously injured. It occurred on Saturday just before two in the morning on State Road 44 and Creekwater Boulevard.
“They [doctors] he’s paralyzed from the neck down and chances are he might barely move like one or two of his arms, but not his legs,” grandparents Daniel and Elizabeth Green stated.
Nathaniel Green is the name of their grandson, the grandparents said. They stated Nathaniel was airlifted to Orlando Health, which is why they are standing by his side in Orlando.
“We allowed him to go over and stay over a friend’s house and turns out they were playing with guns while they were over there,” the Greens stated. “I know [the friend’s] stepdad has guns and we have talked to the stepdad and said we don’t want our grandson anywhere around any guns ever.”
Although the Greens stated they are still investigating the incident, they do not think Nathaniel discharged the gun.
“He is smart enough to know not to point a gun at himself,” the Greens stated.

The bullet that struck their grandson’s throat and spinal cord was successfully extracted from his body, according to the grandparents and the medical staff. On Sunday, he was excited to play in his first football game.
“He loves everybody. He’s outgoing. He’s just all around good kid,” the Greens stated. “And he’s going to be devastated when he wakes up from this is an induced coma right now. So they can do surgery.”
To assist Nathaniel on his arduous path to recovery, the family has organized a fundraiser. Who fired the gun and the events leading up to the shooting have not yet been disclosed by the police.
