In an effort to assist its citizens in escaping poverty and finding some respite during the difficult economic times following the Covid-19 outbreak and inflation, Chicago is going to implement a $500 stimulus program that will last for the entire year.

The stimulus will be a component of the existing income program and will be made available to residents who successfully fulfill the eligibility requirements, which include proving they are Chicago locals by presenting proof of residency and evidence that they are having difficulty paying for necessities like food, gas, and electricity.

“Evanston needs help. We all need help, not just one concentrated place,” Council member Krissie Harris stated. “I have concerns that there is a need for this guaranteed income outside of one area, and if we’re going to make adjustments, I’d like for it to be open.”

Clare Kelly, a fellow council member, countered, saying, “If you’re poor and you live in the First Ward, or in any ward, you need the money the same.”

How do you submit an application?

An applicant can obtain the application form on the City’s official website and submit it along with the required paperwork, which includes proof of residency and income, to apply for the program.

Although Mayor Brandon Johnson indicated it will happen soon, the dates for the application’s opening have not yet been verified, so make sure to keep an eye on websites.

After being approved for the program, participants will receive a $500 pre-loaded debit card that they can use for any purpose they choose. A portion of the money for this card comes from the Federal Rescue Plan.
