After a tribal police officer was shot dead and another injured while responding to a reported disturbance at a Santan residence, the Gila River Indian Community announced on Sunday that dances would no longer be permitted.
The governor of the tribe located south of Phoenix, Stephen Roe Lewis, reported that the leaders of the community council met in special session on Saturday night.
He claimed that in addition to stiffer fines for trespassing and unruly conduct, the council had established a temporary ban on all dances in the community, both legal and prohibited.
The shooting will be investigated jointly by the FBI in Phoenix and the Gila River Police Department, however many specifics are still unknown.
According to the Arizona Republic, the shooting happened at a birthday celebration for a youngster in Santan, which is one of the seven districts that make up the tribal town.
Around two in the morning on Saturday, Joshua Briese—who had only been employed by the Gila River Police Department for less than a year and had not yet finished his field training—and another tribal police officer went to a 911 disturbance report involving a sizable crowd.
According to the police, there were multiple gunfire, striking both cops and injuring four more persons.
The other cop, whose identity has not yet been made public, was described by police as being in serious but stable condition. Briese was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police stated one of the four injured individuals passed away later. On Sunday, the victims’ names were not immediately available.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” the FBI Phoenix stated on Saturday.
“Our hearts and prayers are with these police officers, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragic incident,” Gila River police stated.
The 23-year-old Briese was the son of a Montana sheriff’s officer who also lost his life while performing his duties.
In a Facebook post, the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office announced that David Briese passed away in an automobile accident in November 2006.
According to news sources, David Briese was responding to a backup call for an officer in Billings, Montana, who was handling a belligerent driver who was intoxicated at the time.
