The Appalachian Bear Rescue said on Facebook that a black bear, while bulking up for winter, discovered a tasty lunch on the side of the road and was struck by a car, killing it on a Tennessee highway.

The adult black bear that was injured and killed on Highway 321 approaching Townsend, Tennessee, on Tuesday was reported to the rescue organization, or ABR.

However, according to the agency, the bear “was left in a spot much too dangerous for ABR curators to get to safely,” since the roadway there “quickly becomes steep and curvy as you get closer to the mountains, offering low visibility for drivers.”

The organization claimed that it was critical to remove the bear from that place in order to check if it was a female bear and whether or not there were cubs nearby. Additionally, the bear needed to be moved out of the way of approaching vehicles.

It was decided on Wednesday that the bear was male by ABR curators and the town’s police head. They discovered, upon examining the bear’s remains, that a tray of pancakes had initially drawn the bear to the busy roadway.

“Not even a foot away from the deceased bear lay a platter of discarded pancakes,” the ABR stated. “With fall hyperphagia in full swing, the male bear probably saw the pancakes as an easy, high caloric meal.”

The ABR added: “Unfortunately, this meal was the last meal he would ever have.”

Given the prevalence of black bears in the area, the agency urged locals to live sensibly. ABR stated that it is essential to secure your food, trash, and recyclables and that leaving unneeded food and rubbish outside is “dangerous for not only bears but all other wildlife as well.”

“We hope to use this message to urge the public to refrain from littering alongside our mountain roadways and hopefully save a future bear’s life in the process,” the ABR stated.
