California Man Accused of Drug-Trafficking Murder Faces Hawaiian Justice

A Californian man made an appearance in court on Thursday over his suspected role in a drug-trafficking-related homicide.

As part of a drug trafficking conspiracy, 36-year-old Filimone Tavake is accused of killing a resident of Hawaii on March 27, 2021, at the victim’s home, according to court filings.

On March 22, Tavake was captured in California.

Tvake is charged with a number of offenses, including using a firearm while engaging in drug trafficking, murder in connection with a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy, and causing death with a firearm.

Tavake faces a minimum sentence of 20 years in jail and a potential term of life in prison if found guilty.

Chief of the Honolulu Police Department Arthur “Joe” Logan, FBI Special Agent in Charge Steven Merrill, U.S. Attorney Clare E. Connors for the District of Hawaii, and Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri made the announcement.

Together, the FBI and the Honolulu Police Department are looking into the matter.

The case is being prosecuted by trial attorney Christina Taylor of the Criminal Division’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section in collaboration with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii.
