Donald Lee Hassler, a previously convicted felon, has been formally charged with capital murder in the case of 57-year-old Sheryl Siddall, who went missing from Liberty County.
Siddall was reported missing on September 18 from her home in Horseshoe Lake Estates.
The report of Siddall’s disappearance came from her niece, prompting an investigation. A bloodstain found in the kitchen raised concerns of foul play, leading investigators to believe Siddall didn’t leave willingly.
Her personal belongings, like wallet, purse, ID, and car, were found at her home. Her phone, last traced to a nearby cell tower on September 11, is still missing.
Hassler, 52, and Siddall had been friends for two years. He was at Siddall’s home when deputies came to search for her and has been the main suspect.
Hassler was held at Liberty County Jail for a parole violation of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, as eight firearms were found during the investigation.
After his arrest, Hassler invoked his Fifth Amendment rights and chose not to give information about Siddall’s disappearance.
He’s currently in custody without bail while the search for Siddall continues. A court appearance for the new charge is expected soon.
Captain David Meyers of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office emphasized their unwavering commitment to finding Siddall and bringing closure to her family.
Plans for a memorial service for Siddall are already in progress.
