Police announced on Monday that a Davie man had been taken into custody following an altercation about walking a dog that turned physical, leading to the girlfriend’s parents’ battery.

Glenn Karant, 64, started the fight at 7 p.m. on Sunday at his girlfriend’s house on the 11000 block of North Harmony Lake Circle in Davie when he refused to take the dog for a walk.

An arrest report states that Karant, who was living at the house, became upset and started mumbling in English, which led to conflict with the couple who could only speak Mandarin.

According to the police, Karant then got up from the couch and grabbed his girlfriend’s father’s walking cane, sending him to the ground.

Authorities were informed by the victim’s wife that Karant had kicked her husband while he was on the ground, causing the victim to strike Karant in the face as self-defense.

Police said the home’s Ring security footage, which they said validated the victims’ descriptions of the crime, was seen to them by the couple’s daughter, who translated their version of events to police.

Despite the fact that neither victim had any apparent wounds, investigators were able to conclude from the CCTV and witness statements that Karant purposefully kicked the man during the dispute and took his girlfriend’s father’s cane, which caused him to collapse.

According to jail records, Karant is being held at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail on a $10,000 bond as of Monday. He is accused of two charges of violence on a person 65 years of age or older.
