Due to his tattoos, a Wisconsin man was found guilty of fatally punching a stranger out while out on a date with his spouse.

Joshua Davies, 39, was killed on June 17, 2023, in an attack outside Tabi’s Lake Country Wine Bar in Hartland, Wisconsin. Kevin Sehmer, 65, was found guilty on Thursday of felony murder — battery. About thirty miles to the west of Milwaukee sits Hartland.

According to prosecutors, Sehmer told Davis, “You’re a sinner” and “you’re going to hell” that evening while “looking for a fight,” Milwaukee Fox station WITI reported from the courtroom.

During the closing argument, Sue Opper, the district attorney for Waukesha County, stated that Joshua Davis “took exception to his appearance immediately upon seeing him.” Sehmer informed a detective, according to her, “he didn’t like him from the start.”

Jennifer Davies, the widow of Davies, spoke about how a wonderful date night abruptly changed into the worst night of her life and the beginning of something utterly absurd.

Davies stated during his testimony, “I just remember immediately when the boys walked in him talking very loudly about their tattoos,” according to the station.

Davies was attacked and struck in the head on the pavement outside the bar, resulting in two fractures to his skull and bleeding on the brain.

After being alerted by a group in the 100 block of East Capitol Drive at around eleven that evening, an officer discovered Davies unconscious and laying on the pavement. According to officials, he was brought to a hospital and admitted with serious injuries.

After Davies passed away on July 12, 2023, Sehmer was taken into custody the next day and charged with one felony count of aggravated violence. Later, the charges were enhanced.

Scott Schiro, the defense lawyer, attempted to claim throughout the trial that Sehmer was defending himself when Davies, who was “grossly intoxicated,” lunged at Sehmer with a metal stool. An assertion that was at odds with what one witness, Jon LaPorte, claimed to have seen that fateful evening.

“You didn’t see Josh holding a stool in his hand?”

LaPorte responded, “No.”

“You didn’t see him holding it over his head?” Schiro enquired.

“No,” LaPorte answered.

Sehmer might serve 30 years in jail. According to the online court record, his sentencing is scheduled for September 6.
