FLORIDA CITY, FLA. – – Two people died in Florida City because of a dangerous driver, and U.S. 1 was closed for hours.
Early Saturday morning, Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue teams went to the scene of an accident that happened the night before. The accident happened near the entrance to a Quality Inn, just north of Card Sound Road.
Investigators say that a Chevy pickup truck and a Honda car hit each other on the side.
“It looked like they were going very fast, like 70 or 80 miles per hour,” said a witness. “It was almost certain that it was a car turning around at one of those turns.” “I’m guessing that they didn’t have time to stop.”
The dark-colored truck was going fast down U.S. 1 when it hit the Quality Inn sign. This was caught on surveillance video. As it stopped, the other car could be seen to the right of the picture.
“There was a loud bang. “The car went over the curb, slid into the grass, and then hit the Denny’s pole,” Kwiatkowski said.
Kwiatkowski said that he ran to the crash site and tried to help the people who were hurt.
“I tried to cut out the airbags to see if they were moving, and when I first ran over there, they were,” he said. “Then the paramedics did rescue breaths on the woman first, and then on the other one.”
The dark-colored truck’s driver and passenger were both found dead at the scene.
Investigators said that speed was part of what happened.
“I thought I could help, but I’m still scared,” Kwiatkowski said.
A few hours later, the broken hotel sign was caught on camera by 7News.
Officers shut down a section of southbound U.S. 1 while they looked into what was going on. Since then, the road has been closed.
It is still not clear if the driver of the Honda had to be taken to the hospital or if they were able to walk away.
As they continued their investigation, the police worked to get in touch with the victim’s next of kin.
