Following a shooting on Friday at Joppatowne High School, which is located just outside of Baltimore, one student is dead and another is being held by the police.

A 16-year-old student is accused of shooting a 15-year-old after a brawl inside a men’s restroom shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler.

The victim, who was in critical condition, was transported by medical chopper to the hospital, where he eventually passed away. The purported adolescent shooter fled the school but was soon apprehended.

“Our hearts are breaking for the victim and the victim’s family,” Harford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sean Bulson stated. “This should not be happening in schools.”

“Sadly we stand here today to discuss another school shooting,” Sheriff Gahler stated. “A tragic day four days into the school year.”

Robert Cassilly, Harford County Executive stated, ” Harford County is shocked and saddened by the terrible act of violence committed by one student against another, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant. I would like to thank our first responders, courageous school staff, and the community members who came together to render aid to the victim and to assist law enforcement. Our hearts are broken for Warren’s family and friends as we pray for healing and peace in our community.”

Massive police reaction

Rapid and extensive emergency action was taken in response to Joppatowne High School. “Within 15 minutes more than 100 police officers were here from all of our partner agencies,” Gahler said.

According to Gahler, a school resource officer was inside the building at the time and did not hear the gunfire. The principal, the school nurse, and that officer arrived at the gunshot scene in a hurry.

The incident resulted in the evacuation of the school. Parents were directed to pick up their children at the reunification facility, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.

Bulson stated that the date of the school’s reopening has not been decided. Students will have access to counseling.

About twenty miles northeast of Baltimore is where Joppatowne is situated. Students returned to school for the 2024–2025 academic year just three days ago.

Two days following the school massacre in Georgia

The sheriff of Joppatowne stressed on Friday that the shooting occurred just two days after two students and two instructors were slain inside Georgia’s Apalachee High School.

“We’re all familiar with the horrible shooting that took four lives in Georgia just a couple days ago, and here we stand in Harford County with a school shooting,” Sheriff Gahler stated.

In connection with the shooting in Georgia, a 14-year-old pupil is facing adult charges. In the case, his father is also accused.
