On Wednesday, the Florida Senate supported a bill that would prohibit counties and towns from accepting identification cards and other documents from organizations that have given these credentials to individuals who are not authorized to be in the nation.
After the House approved the bill (HB 1451) earlier this week, the Senate voted 28–9 to approve it. Ron DeSantis, the governor, can now sign the law.
The bill would cover what are popularly referred to as “community” ID cards, which aren’t valid for voting or driving.
Opponents of the plan have stated time and time again that law enforcement officers are in favor of community ID cards, which let those without alternative means of identification show identify to the police.
Following years of efforts by the Republican-dominated Legislature to toughen up on illegal immigration, the measure was passed on Wednesday.
Legislators and DeSantis passed a bill last year that forbade local governments from giving funds to unauthorized immigrants in order to get identification cards.
