In the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Saturday, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Monday. There have been calls for her resignation or termination.

The committee’s chairman, GOP Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, confirmed the hearing at 10 a.m. ET in a statement. “Americans demand answers from Director Kimberly Cheatle about the Secret Service’s historic security failures that led to the attempted assassination of President Trump, murder of an innocent victim, and harm to others in the crowd,” Comer said.

According to Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, the organization is “committed to better understanding what happened before, during, and after” the shooting “to ensure it never happens again.”

Comer subpoenaed the director to appear before members on Monday as a result of a back-and-forth this week between the Republican-led committee and the Secret Service on a possible date for Cheatle to testify.

The agency replied that although Cheatle appreciated the chance to speak, he requested that the date be rescheduled for later this week or the next week.

Rejecting the request, Comer and the committee’s leading Democrat, Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, stated in an uncommon joint statement that she “must appear before the House Oversight Committee without delay on Monday.”

The inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security declared on Wednesday that it is looking into the circumstances surrounding the attempted assassination. A number of Republican members of Congress have also pledged to start their own investigations.

The House Judiciary Committee will hear testimony from FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday regarding the agency’s probe into the incident.
