Following a preliminary 2.9 magnitude earthquake near Pasadena, a small tremor was detected Thursday afternoon in the San Gabriel Valley and northeast Los Angeles.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of around 6.4 miles at 4:04 p.m., less than two miles southwest of Pasadena in Alhambra.

Several people reported feeling the tremor, which made closet doors rattle and might have been mistaken for a big truck or a heavy-footed neighbor.

You can file a “Felt It” report with the USGS if you experienced any shaking following Thursday’s earthquake.

Although California experiences thousands of earthquakes every year, the great majority are extremely small. Only roughly 15 to 20 of these achieve a magnitude of 4.0 or higher, while several hundred reach a magnitude of 3.0, according to the USGS.

Only Alaska records more earthquakes annually than California in North America.

How to respond to an earthquake?

Knowing what to do to protect oneself and reduce harm during an earthquake is essential. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) offers comprehensive instructions on what to do in these situations. The main points are as follows:

Hold on, Drop, and Cover:

  • Drop: Drop on your hands and knees right away. In addition to keeping you from falling, this position enables you to stay low and, if needed, crawl to safety.
  • Cover: If at all possible, seek cover beneath a sturdy desk or table and use one arm to shield your head and neck. Get down close to an interior wall away from windows if there isn’t any shelter available. To safeguard your important organs, stay on your knees and stoop down.
  • Hold On: Until the shaking stops, stay inside your shelter. If your shelter moves, be ready to relocate with it.
