A Santa Cruz County press release states that Elizabeth Gutfahr, the former treasurer of the county, was sued by the county for allegedly embezzling at least $39,412,000 over a ten-year period.
The financial institution JPMorganChase reported 11 fraudulent transactions totaling $375,000 to the county’s knowledge. The Federal Bureau of Justice, the Department of Justice, and Santa Cruz County all launched investigations as a result of the results.
The former treasurer was the target of a civil case that Santa Cruz County filed in Pima County Superior Court.
“Though this is a significant amount of money for our community, we will do everything in our power to avoid impact to the day-to-day operations of the entities that rely on funding from the County, and we will continue to provide straightforward updates as things progress,” the county stated in the press release.

It was also announced by the county that it will keep up its full cooperation and support for the FBI and US Department of Justice’s independent investigations.
