Fatal Collision in Indian River County 65-Year-Old Man Killed in Crash

SEBASTIAN, Fla. — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) is currently investigating a fatal accident that occurred on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old man.

At approximately 2:23 p.m., IRCSO received a call regarding the incident, which took place at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and 99th Street in Indian River County, just east of the city limits of Sebastian.

According to the report, the deceased man, aged 68, was operating a 1967 blue Volkswagen Beetle and had come to a stop at a stop sign facing eastbound on 99th Street, at its junction with U.S. Highway 1.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old man was driving a 2022 white Lexus, traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 1 in the inside lane, approaching the intersection with 99th Street.

The investigation revealed that the 68-year-old man failed to yield the right of way and attempted to make a left turn across the southbound lanes, intending to travel northbound on U.S. Highway 1.

As a result, the Volkswagen entered the path of the oncoming Lexus, resulting in a collision where the front of the Lexus struck the left side of the Volkswagen, as per IRCSO’s report.

The Volkswagen came to a stop facing southeast on the east shoulder of U.S. Highway 1, while the Lexus eventually came to a halt in the northbound outside lane of the highway, according to deputies.

The 68-year-old man was immediately transported to Lawnwood Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

IRCSO has stated that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
