A distributor of fruit is alerting customers to the possibility that certain cantaloupe melons were tainted with salmonella during the previous month.
A recall has been issued for 224 containers of entire cantaloupes marketed under the Kandy brand by Arizona-based Eagle Produce LLC. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a press release on Friday announcing the recall.
The FDA claims that the impacted melons had lot codes of 846468 and UPC numbers of 4050 on their labels. From August 13 to August 17, the cantaloupes were offered for sale in Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia.
“The cantaloupes are identified with a red and white sticker with KANDY across the top and UPC number code, 4050,” the FDA warns. “No other products or lot code dates are affected by this recall.”
As of Friday, no illnesses linked to the cantaloupes had been documented; nevertheless, the FDA cautions that customers in specific age groups run the risk of dying from salmonella.

“Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the FDA’s website. “Healthy people may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and abdominal pain.”
“In rare cases the organism can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illness such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
It is advised that anyone who bought the recalled melons throw them away right away.
