First Lady Casey DeSantis Introduces Unique Opportunity for Classroom Involvement

In order to assist parents and students in developing resilience at home and at school, First Lady Casey DeSantis launched new Resiliency Florida tools.

In order to assist students in overcoming obstacles, the First Lady also revealed a first-of-its-kind opportunity for parents and grandparents in Florida to serve as Resiliency Coaches in schools.

After completing an hour-long training and a volunteering practical at a school, parents and grandparents who are working as Resiliency Coaches will be qualified for a $150 honorarium.

Parents and grandparents will be able to enroll in Resiliency Coach training this summer, with practicum hours starting in the fall of 2024.

“Resiliency is important for students to successfully navigate and overcome life’s obstacles,” First Lady Casey DeSantis stated. “Florida parents, grandparents, teachers, and mentors will now have opportunities to coach and access to high-quality resources to lead important discussions with students about resiliency.”

A first-of-its-kind nationwide initiative called Resiliency Florida aims to reframe mental health education by emphasizing the development of resiliency skills such as grit, perseverance, gratitude, personal accountability, decision-making, mentorship, self-awareness, problem-solving, empathy, citizenship, and honesty.

According to Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., “the First Lady’s Resiliency Florida initiative is an innovative way to approach mental health and student support. We are proud to be a part of this historic endeavor and look forward to finding more ways to encourage Florida students to be resilient.”

In February 2021, First Lady DeSantis introduced the Resiliency Florida initiative, which aims to provide Florida’s youngsters with the necessary tools to overcome obstacles in life.

The first lady’s proposals for this innovative approach to resiliency education—which aims to teach important skills in the early grades and support children when they exhibit those principles in later years—were endorsed by the State Board of Education in March 2023.

In order to help students actively participate in activities and exercises that will prepare them to be honorable, responsible citizens, as well as to help them recognize the importance of these ideals, the standards incorporate concepts of civic responsibility through citizenship and mentorship.

To help adolescents develop resilience, the Department has created new paths for adults, parents, school counselors, and educators in addition to the tools that were revealed today.

Florida is still the nation’s leader in education, and the state’s ongoing emphasis on resilience is just one more illustration of its dedication to producing resilient kids and parents with influence.
