A $1,500 fine and a 23-week suspended sentence were imposed on Thursday for the sixth American who had been arrested in the Turks and Caicos Islands in recent months due to ammunition found in her backpack, the court reported.

Florida grandma Sharitta Grier took an unexpected Mother’s Day trip to the British territory, but as she attempted to return home, police discovered two gunshots in her carry-on bag and placed her under arrest.

She said to reporters during the sentence hearing on Thursday that when she got back to Orlando, she would make sure to spend time with her family and friends and eat soul food.

Grier declared, “I’m just excited about everything, ready to get back home to my family and my grandkids,” prior to her anticipated Thursday afternoon departure from the islands. “It’s been a long time coming, but, you know, God is still good. I’ve seen the hand of God move during this whole journey, so I’m satisfied.”

She claimed that during her weeks-long stay on the islands, people gave her food, housing, and assistance.

“It was like strangers reaching out at me and like just blessing me out of nowhere, so I could really see the hand of God,” she stated.

“They chained me to a chair by my leg,” she said. “It’s cold, scared, it was awful, it was so awful, I couldn’t sleep.”

Grier was freed from imprisonment, but while her case was being heard by the courts, she was forced to stay on the islands and face the possibility of going to prison.

“You have good days, bad days — mentally draining, like not knowing what’s going to happen or when it’s going to happen, if a court date’s going to be pushed back,” she stated last month. “It’s a lot, it’s a lot mentally.”

After other Americans were detained due to ammunition found in their bags and were not imprisoned but instead had to pay penalties before being allowed to return to the United States, she expressed optimism about her case.

Bryan Hagerich of Pennsylvania was fined $6,700 and given a suspended sentence in May for having 20 gun rounds in his bag when he went on vacation.

A few days later, Tyler Wenrich of Virginia was found in possession of two 9 mm bullets in his rucksack while attempting to join a cruise ship. He was sentenced to time served and a $9,000 fine.
