Might it be? The island doesn’t slow down in the summer? That could happen if a plan moving through the Florida legislature goes into effect and Miami Dade County Public Schools decide to take part.
SB 1564 was passed by the FL Senate’s Education Pre-K–12 committees unanimously, and the Appropriations Committee on Education will talk about it on April 18.
The suggested program called the Year-round School Pilot Program, would set up a pilot program for 4 school years and give schools a way to apply to be a part of it. Then, the Education Commissioner would pick a certain number of school areas to take part in the program.
After the four-year trial, politicians would decide if they wanted to make it a bigger program. If there are 180 days of school, each district can choose how to divide the year up.
Senator Linda Stewart from Orlando is behind the plan. When she talked about it, she said that 12-month school years would help students catch up after the COVID-19 pandemic.
