Police said that a high school teacher in North Carolina was taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly abusing a student sexually.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office reports that Britney Marie Vernon, 39, was charged with three counts of felony indecent liberties with a student and three charges of criminal sex acts with a student.

First reported on July 1, the frightening allegations of abuse against the Randleman High School teacher were made public.

Police claimed the allegations were serious enough to justify an arrest, but they could not provide any further information or say whether Vernon was allegedly targeting more than one teenager.

The accused victim’s age and whether or not they were a student of Vernon’s were also left unclear by the sheriff. 16 is the legal age of consent in North Carolina.

According to the school’s webpage, Vernon teaches Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the Health Services section of the high school.

Although she started working as a teacher at Randleman High on August 21, 2023, a spokeswoman for the Randolph County School System said that she has been employed there since August 2018.

Vernon is currently on an unpaid suspension.
