FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The police are currently investigating an incident that took place on Tuesday morning in Fort Lauderdale, involving a shooting and a subsequent car crash, resulting in the death of one man.
As reported by the Fort Lauderdale police, they received an alert from Shot Spotter just before 1:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of Northwest Third Court. Upon arrival, they discovered evidence of a shooting.
A resident of the area informed Local 10 News journalist Annaliese Garcia that he heard approximately five gunshots. He described the sound as quite loud and initially thought it might be fireworks. However, considering the early hour, he realized fireworks were unlikely.
Following this, a collision happened at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and Northwest Seventh Avenue. The police mentioned that one of the passengers had sustained a gunshot wound, and the driver was attempting to transport him to Broward Health Medical Center when the crash occurred.
Emergency personnel from the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue took the injured individual to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Erma Sargent, a resident of Fort Lauderdale, expressed her concern after hearing gunshots near her home on Tuesday morning. She recalled hearing three initial shots followed by two more. Upon seeing the flashing police lights and the area cordoned off from her window, she became aware that something serious had happened.
Broward Boulevard had to be closed for a few hours to facilitate the investigation, but it has since been reopened.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this point.
